2014 Vo Rogue Plate Results: Mywayorthehighway Beats Hijack Hussy

December 29th, 2014

Mick Mair’s Sunshine Coast-trained filly Mywayorthehighway has secured her Magic Millions 3YO Guineas bid after an upset win over the short-priced favourite Hijack Hussy in the Vo Rogue Plate 2014 over the weekend.

The three-year-old daughter of Swiss Ace scored back-to-back victories when rising in class for the $150,000 Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate (1300m) at the Gold Coast on Saturday.

Before that she had never raced over further than 1200m or in black-type company.

Her maiden trip to the Gold Coast however proved lucrative with Mywayorthehighway backing up from a win in a maiden sprint over 1000m at home on December 7 to score a boilover in the Vo Rogue as an $81 roughie.

Not even a Soft (7) track or a wide barrier 11 of 13 draw could stop Mair’s up-and-comer who led nearly all the way in a gun ride from Daniel Griffin who was impressed with the way she held off the late challengers over the final 200 metres.

“They kept coming at her but she just kept fighting,” Griffin said after the win.

On the line Mywayorthehighway ($81) had a long neck to spare over the Tony Gollan-trained top fancy Hijack Hussy ($2.60F) with Stuart Kendrick’s Choisir colt Worthy Cause ($21) a further half head away for third.

Despite the defeat Hijack Hussy, winner of the Listed Lexus Hybrid Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day three back, remains the $3.60 favourite through Ladbrokes.com.au to win the $1 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m) back at the track on January 10.

Mywayorthehighway has firmed notably in those futures markets but is still at a generous $18 after her weekend win.

Mair missed the race watching on from home where he is recovering from a recent stroke.

He purchased the filly for Magic Millions owner Gerry Harvey for $25,000, Mywayorthehighway now having won over $109,000 in prize money.

She was also the last horse picked out by late racecaller Wayne Wilson who wanted to race one final horse before losing his battle with cancer earlier in the year, adding more emotion to the Vo Rogue Plate result.

“He (Wilson) took a share for his wife Sally who now races the filly in partnership with some other stable clients,” Mair’s stable rep Belinda Kelly said trackside on Saturday.

“Mick will be thrilled. He actually watched the race at home with Jana Griffin (Dan Griffin’s wife).

“I don’t know what to say. I can’t remember ever being so thrilled.”
